So 2016 is almost gone, some will be glad to see it go. It’s been an interesting year for the world in general, and 2017 has the potential to top it but I like to stay positive, so am excited about what lies ahead.
2016 was a good year, I returned from two shoulder operations and stayed injury free, I got fitter and reduced my Parkrun time at Lancaster from 30 minutes to 25:40. I also raised my FTP by 17 watts and completed my 3 sprint triathlons without much incident – tripped over my own feet on the run at one of them.
So not a massive year, certainly nothing to shout about when I compare it to most of my friends posting their achievements on Facebook and Twitter with their medal hauls, massive mileage, and quite fantastic feats of endurance. But the year couldn’t have gone better, well it could, I could be faster and lighter but all in good time.
So well done to everyone who achieved something amazing this year, wether that was your first parkrun or your 150th, your first sprint or a triple ironman, a 10k or a 24hr ultra run. I applaud you all and wish you all the best for 2017.
For me 2017 will see me move away from triathlon, for the first time in years there are no swim, bike and run races in my calendar. Instead I have three running races that I am very excited about.
In March I will be taking part in the Coniston 14, a race I watched my dad do several times as a child so I’m excited to be a second generation Holgate doing that. It’s also significant because 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of Myself, Min, Dave the Ex Spartan and Viking doing that infamous first ironman. And for the first time since we will all be running round Coniston together. Can’t wait.
Following that in May is the main focus of my year, the Meridian 50k Ultra. This will be my first ever ultra and to say I am excited is a massive understatement. It is also he British championships so it will have a world class field, I shall be trying not to come last.
Then in October I’ll be doing a 6 hour race in Chorley around a 700m loop, seeing how far I can run in the time given. The lap system in itself will be a massive mental challenge.
I will learn a lot about myself this year I guess, I need to dig deep but be sensible also. Stick to the plan and embrace what comes. 2017 is going to be one of the best years of my athletic life. I can’t wait.
